Battlefields are continuously changing, prompting governments throughout the world to invest hundreds of billions of dollars each year in their armed forces in an effort to produce the most modern training, technology, and weaponry.
Global Firepower, a website that measures military strength, ranks the following five armies as the most powerful as of 2020, depending on how they compare in factors “ranging from military might and financials to logistical capability and geography”:
5. Japan
This Asian country has only a quarter of the military troops of its problematic neighbor North Korea, with an estimated active military force of 247,160, but it makes up for it with current equipment.
According to Global Firepower’s data, Japan has 152 special mission aircraft, more than any other country in the world except the United States, and a strong Navy fleet of 40 destroyers.
There are also 3,130 armored vehicles, 1,004 tanks, and 119 attack helicopters on the list.
In 2020, Japan is expected to spend $49 billion on its military.

This year, India is expected to spend $61 billion on its military.

China, Asia’s most powerful country and a growing adversary of the United States, comes in third on this list.
The communist superpower is estimated to have 2,183,000 active personnel, making it the world’s largest.
In recent years, China has been beefing up its navy while waging territorial wars in the South China Sea. According to Global Firepower, they currently have 74 submarines, 52 frigates, and 36 destroyers.
China has 33,000 armored vehicles and 3,500 tanks on the ground. They have 1,232 fighter planes and 281 attack helicopters in their Air Force.
In 2020, China is expected to spend $237 billion on its military.

On land, it has an estimated 1,013,628 active men in control of 27,038 armored vehicles, 6,083 self-propelled artillery units, and 3,860 rocket projectors.
