What is Facebook Dating?
Facebook Dating is a new dating feature offered by the popular social media platform. The service connects users with people they may know who are also on the site, and allows them to set up dates.
Facebook Dating is a way to find dates on Facebook. It’s similar to the Dating section on Facebook, but you only see potential matches if you are friends with them on Facebook already.
For example, if two people who don’t know each other sign up for Facebook Dating, they will not be able to see each other’s profiles if they both select “Only me” as the audience they want to receive their profile.
The app is currently in testing, but you can sign up to be notified when it becomes available. Facebook Dating will be a standalone app on Facebook, which means you’ll need to download it to your phone to use it.
How Does Facebook Dating Work?
Facebook Dating works pretty much the same way that regular Facebook does. You can use the feature to connect with friends of friends you may not otherwise know.
Unlike regular Facebook, your dating profile will not show up in your friends’ newsfeeds. Instead, you’ll find people on Facebook Dating via a dedicated Dating section in the app. If the person on the other end also swipes right on you, you’ll receive a “match.”
You can then message that person directly from the app — with no friends involved — to set up a date. In fact, both parties must explicitly say “yes” to begin a conversation. If a person is not interested in your profile, they can choose to “pass.” This will not affect your relationship with them as friends on Facebook.
Pros of Facebook Dating
- No need to create a new profile
- If you have a strong network of friends on Facebook who you’d like to keep in the loop, Facebook Dating may be ideal for you. You can leverage your existing network of friends to find new connections and dates.
- You’re pre-selected
- If you’re shy when it comes to dating or you like to play it safe, Facebook Dating can be a nice way to ease into the dating scene.
- Get real-time insights into your date’s personality
- Facebook Dating helps you get a sense of your date’s personality before you meet up. If you like what you see, you can use this knowledge to open up the conversation and get things off the ground.
- Your friends can help set you up
- If you’re shy or if you don’t know where to begin, your friends can help you find potential dates.
Cons of Facebook Dating
- You have to be friends with your match first
- If you’re looking for a quick and easy meet-up, Facebook Dating may not be the best choice for you. The app is best suited for people looking to enter into committed relationships.
- You can’t explore the app alone
- If you’re not someone who likes to be social, Facebook Dating may not be for you. You must be willing to engage in conversations with potential matches to find dates.
- Only people you know can see your profile
- If you’re hoping to turn up more matches, Facebook Dating may not be for you. Your profile only appears in front of people you know — not strangers who are outside of your network. – You can’t filter by age or interests
- Facebook Dating doesn’t allow you to filter potential dates by age or interests, so you could end up meeting people who aren’t a good fit for you.
Is Facebook Dating Worth It?
That’s a tough question to answer. Facebook Dating is free and available to anyone who has an account with Facebook. However, given the nature of the platform, it’s unlikely that you’ll find any serious long-term relationships.
You can select a wide range of people to match with, including friends of friends, so you’re likely to find dates quickly. But also keep in mind that this also means you could match with people who aren’t at all interested in you romantically.
If you’re looking for a casual dating experience, then yes, Facebook Dating would be worth it for you. But if you’re hoping for something more serious, you may want to try one of the other apps or websites outlined below.
Why is Facebook Dating different?
Facebook Dating is different in a few ways. First, it’s a standalone app that does not connect with your Facebook profile. This makes it easy to keep your dating life and your friends life separate.
It’s also designed to give you an easy way to get out of conversations with people you’re not interested in — something that could prove tricky on regular Facebook.
Finally, Facebook Dating is different in that it’s not free. While you can sign up for the service and see what it’s like for free, to actually message people and use the app’s features, you’ll need to pay a monthly or yearly fee.
Is FB Dating Effective?
Facebook Dating is effective in the sense that it’s free and easy to use. That said, you may want to try another dating app if you’re looking for serious relationships with long-term potential.
Facebook Dating is great for people who are interested in meet-ups, casual dating, and for meeting friends of friends.
But if you have specific interests like religion, ethnicity, or shared hobbies, you’re unlikely to find a match through Facebook Dating. If you’re looking for something more serious, there are other apps that may be more effective for you.
For example, Match, eHarmony, and OkCupid are popular websites you can use to find a long-term relationship.
Online Dating Basics
- What is online dating? Online dating is the act of meeting people and forming relationships with them through digital platforms. The majority of people meet their partners online today.
- What is an online dating site? An online dating site is a platform where people can sign up and create a profile, and then search for other users based on criteria like location and interests. The site will suggest matches, and you can message whoever you like.
- How much does online dating cost? Online dating sites vary in price. Many are free, but some can cost up to $100 a month.
- How do I know if a dating site is legitimate? Be careful when signing up for dating services. Avoid sites that sound too good to be true. If a site promises you can meet your soul mate in a matter of days, that’s a red flag.
- What are the most popular dating sites? The best dating sites are ones that meet your specific needs. However, the two most popular dating sites are eHarmony and Match. These are basic dating sites that are free to use.
