Original Nokia Phone

Nokia: A long and innovative history

Nokia 1011

There was a time when Nokia was the only cell phone company that mattered, as any mobile phone geek can tell you. It developed several of the world’s most successful phones from the 1990s until the arrival of the iPhone and Android. Relive some of Nokia’s biggest hits and most daring leaps of faith with me.

It has to start somewhere, right? That was the 1011 with Nokia. It wasn’t the first GSM handset or the first commercially available mobile phone, but it was the first mass-produced GSM phone. It could just make calls and send text messages, but that was all Nokia needed to get started on a global scale.

Date of First Publication: 1992

Nokia 2110

The 2110 wasn’t much for looks or features, but it was the first Nokia phone to have the company’s iconic ringtone.

Date of first publication: 1994

Nokia 6110

The Nokia 6110, which has a similar look to the Nokia 2110, earned its place on this list by being the first Nokia to have the extremely addictive game Snake.

It was first introduced in 1997.

Nokia 8110

The Nokia 8110 was the first phone from Nokia to use a slider design. “Banana phone” (it had a curved shape when the slider was open) and “‘The Matrix’ phone” were two additional names for it (it appeared in the film). At this stage, the features were still limited; you didn’t even receive an alarm clock. Nokia reintroduced the 8110 in bright yellow at Mobile World Congress 2018. And it was 4G this time.

Year of First Publication: 1998

Nokia 7110

Next came the 7110, which added the spring-loaded slider we saw on the film version of of the 8810. It was also the first Nokia phone to have a mobile browser and T9 predictive text.

Introduced: 1999

Nokia 8210

Another type that practically everyone owned was the 8210, which was compact and light. It contained an infrared port, which was a forerunner to Bluetooth, and you could swap out the covers. It made appearances in films such as “Absolutely Fabulous” (where Patsy mistaken it for a little shoe) and the first “Charlie’s Angels.”

Nokia 3310

Voice dialing, removable covers, a calculator, and a user-friendly design were all included in the 3310, which was comparable to the massively popular 3210 from 1999. Nokia reintroduced it in a fresh edition at the 2017 Mobile World Congress.

Nokia 6310i

The Nokia 6310i was Nokia’s first Bluetooth phone, and it came with Java-based games, voice commands, 2.5GB of data, and a simple personal organizer. It even had a camera, but it couldn’t send photo messages.

Introduced in the year 2002

Bottom line of CNET’s review: The 6310i’s design is unremarkable, but it’s a cheap workhorse phone with a robust feature set and long battery life.

Nokia 3530

The Nokia 3530 was one of many phones with a strange keypad. The 3595 gained a few more features to a similar design the next year, and the 2300 got a bright pink and purple skin. Color televisions were still a novelty at the time.

Introduced in the year 2002
