At least in terms of smartphones, the year 2021 is off to a wonderful start. Xiaomi recently released the Mi 10i (Review), a powerful 5G smartphone with a low price tag. Oppo, with its fresh new Reno 5 Pro 5G, is just behind it.
The Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G is also exceptionally thin and light, with a thickness of 7.6mm and a weight of only 173g. The top bears a ‘Designed for Reno’ inscription, while the bottom contains a dual-SIM tray, USB Type-C connector, and a single speaker. Despite the phone’s plastic chassis, the build quality is excellent, and the back cameras protrude only slightly.
The MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC, which is constructed on a 7nm technology and features four ARM Cortex-A77 and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores, powers the Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G. It boasts a built-in 5G modem and wireless connectivity options like Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. ColorOS 11.1, which is based on Android 11, runs on the Reno 5 Pro.
I thought the display was fantastic. The brightness was more than adequate, and the material was easily legible even in direct sunshine. The Reno 5 Pro 5G can run demanding apps and games in the real world with relative ease.
Overall, the Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G is a fantastic value for money. It boasts a quality design, a bright display, a lengthy battery life, lightning-quick charging, and decent cameras. However, video quality could be better, especially in low light, and I’d like to see 4K stabilization. Stereo speakers would have been beneficial as well.
